Toys 'R' Us planning to offer quiet holiday hours for children with autism

One toy store giant is hoping to do what it can to help families affected by autism shop this holiday season.

Several branches of Toys "R" Us across the UK recently held quiet hours in an effort to create an autism-friendly store environment.

"For many autistic people and their families a simple trip to the shops, which should be an enjoyable experience, can be fraught with difficulty," Daniel Cadey, autism access manager for the National Autistic Society, told Britain's Telegraph. “Autistic children and adults can become overwhelmed with too much information inside a busy store."

The move created a calmer shopping experience free of excessive light, in-store music and announcements.

Meghan Sowa, a spokesperson for Toys "R" Us, said the company is planning to test similar quiet hours here in the States.

"We’re working on a plan to test these types of opportunities on a local level – pairing our stores with local organizations to create an event for kids with special needs and their families, and will also assess opportunities to scale it nationally," she said in an email.
